For years, conventional wisdom said that we need eight cups of water daily for proper hydration. Not so, say new scientific guidelines from The Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Science (IOM/NAS). All beverages, including those that contain caffeine, contribute to proper hydration. If you’re not in the mood for water, it’s okay to reach for something else you enjoy, like tea or a soft drink. Of course water is always the best choice; it’s just not the only one. Why is it so important to stay hydrated? Find out the answer to this and many other beverage-related questions at The Beverage Institute For Health & Wellness website. |

Do you work out regularly? If so, you may already know the importance of drinking enough fluids to sustain you throughout your workout. But when you sweat, your body also loses electrolytes and burns through calories. This leaves your muscles depleted, which is not good because they need adequate glucose to fuel their work. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, you can replenish this glucose by drinking a sports drink during your workout. Another benefit to sports drinks is taste. People consume 45 to 50 percent more liquid when it’s flavored. That’s because people are more likely to consume a beverage they enjoy. So keep drinking your favorite flavor of sports drink. It’ll keep you hydrated while you’re running a 5K or pushing yourself to the limit in that spinning class.

If you’ve ever said, “I was born with a sweet tooth”, you weren’t kidding. According to taste researchers, sweetness is one of our first flavor experiences – newborns clearly sense and enjoy sweet tastes. That sweet taste usually comes from one of two types of sweeteners: sugars, which provide calories, and low-calorie sweeteners, which provide few or no calories. Learning about the sweeteners used in beverages can help you make informed decisions and better understand the role beverages play in a healthy diet. Want to learn more about your sweetness options?
